Hector DAURÉ (1755–1805) - Lot 101
Hector DAURÉ (1755–1805) Signed service order regarding the unloading of flour intended for the army’s rations in Saint-Domingue. Le Cap, 7 Pluviôse, Year XI [January 27, 1803]. Handwritten official document on a printed form, 2 folio pages, drawn up in Le Cap, dated 7 Pluviôse, Year XI of the French Republic (January 27, 1803), signed by Hector Dauré, colonial prefect of the western part of Saint-Domingue and chief quartermaster of the army. Hector DAURÉ (1755–1805), who served as commissary-general and later as colonial prefect under the Consulate, was one of the principal civil and military administrators of Saint-Domingue during Leclerc’s expedition. In charge of finances, provisions, and logistics, he played a crucial role in France’s final efforts to retain the colony. An interesting service order addressed to the general administrators of supplies, prescribing the procedures for receiving a ship carrying part of the supplies from Citizen Hammerbeck, a major supplier to the French army. Dauré orders that three administrators be appointed to jointly verify, unload, and accept three hundred barrels destined for the stores at Le Cap for distribution to the troops. A handwritten note adds that the salted meats should also be inspected. The reverse side bears various administrative annotations regarding the execution of the order, the quartermaster’s department, and the procedures for receiving the goods. This document provides a detailed illustration of the organization of the logistics services for the French expedition to Saint-Domingue a few months before the colony’s final loss and the proclamation of Haiti’s independence. Condition: signs of use. Old creases from handling, significant water stains, tears, and small marginal losses, with no major damage to the text. The document remains perfectly legible.
