DAMLEY (General William, active during the Spanish War) - Lot 98
DAMLEY (General William, active during the Spanish War) Instructions to the general officers commanding the divisions. Gallegos, January 8, 1812. Important handwritten document in English, 2 folio pages, dated Gallegos, January 8, 1812, addressed to the general officers commanding the divisions of the British army during the Iberian Peninsula campaign. A military document of the highest order setting forth the arrangements made by the British command in preparation for the imminent attack on Ciudad Rodrigo, a strategic stronghold held by French troops. The instructions detail with great precision the divisions’ order of march, the routes to be taken, departure times before dawn, the crossing of fords, the organization of convoys, resupply, baggage, and the relief of units in action—all with the constant aim of minimizing the strain placed on the men. These directives, drafted in Gallegos on January 8, 1812, were part of the immediate preparations for the siege of Ciudad Rodrigo, which was won a few days later, on January 19, 1812, by the Allied forces commanded by Arthur Wellesley, Viscount Wellington. This victory opened the way into Spain for the Anglo-Portuguese armies and constituted one of the first major Allied offensives against the Napoleonic forces. Included is an old typescript in French, annotated in red pencil, providing a translation and historical analysis of the document. A few original creases, minor foxing, and slight, insignificant traces of moisture. In good condition.
