A gracious letter of courtesy in which the famous actor thanks his correspondent for his annual invitation while announcing the details of his upcoming stay in Reims. He writes, in part: “I thank you for your kind invitation; I cannot promise not to take advantage of your generosity.” He then details his travel plans: “I will be staying at the hotel, arriving in Reims tomorrow at 8:30 p.m. and departing at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday. ” The letter ends with a particularly warm closing: “My warmest regards to you and your family, dear Sir.” followed by his handwritten signature: Coquelin cadet. One of the most famous actors of his time, Ernest Coquelin—known as Coquelin cadet—joined the Comédie-Française in 1867, where he distinguished himself in both the classical repertoire and contemporary productions. A lecturer, author, and actor highly regarded both in the provinces and in Paris, he maintained an extensive correspondence with his admirers and the artistic societies that regularly sought his presence. A charming courtesy letter illustrating Coquelin the Younger’s numerous tours and the friendly ties he maintained with his correspondents in Reims.
