COQUELIN CADET (Ernest Coquelin, known as) (1848–1909). - Lot 94
COQUELIN CADET (Ernest Coquelin, known as) (1848–1909). Signed autograph letter. Signed autograph letter “Coquelin cadet,” Paris, November 20, 1881, 2 pages in-12 on a double-leaf sheet, in brown ink. An interesting letter regarding professional negotiations in which Coquelin Cadet responds to a proposal to relocate to Reims and sets his terms at 500 francs. “Sir, In response to your kind letter of the 18th of this month, my terms are 500 francs; I would be delighted to return to Reims. Please let me know the date, if my terms are acceptable to you. Please accept, Sir, the assurance of my highest regards. Coquelin Cadet.” This letter fits perfectly within the context of Coquelin Cadet’s career in the early 1880s, a period when he was already a member of the Comédie-Française and was becoming one of the great performers of comic monologues. Contemporary and bibliographic sources indicate that he published and performed numerous monologues during this time, particularly around 1881–1883. Condition Very good overall condition. Fine laid paper, normal creases, slight corner wear. Neat and clearly legible handwriting. Significance A fine professional letter from Coquelin Cadet, setting his fees for a performance or a show in Reims. An interesting document shedding light on the economics of tours, readings, and theatrical evenings during the early Belle Époque.
