COQUELIN CADET (Ernest Coquelin, known as) (1848–1909). - Lot 92
COQUELIN CADET (Ernest Coquelin, known as) (1848–1909). Signed autograph letter. Paris, n.d. [late 19th century]. Signed autograph letter, 1 page in-16 on correspondence card, with its autograph envelope addressed to Mr. H. Walbaum, 11 Rue du Marc, Reims. Paris postmark and 15-centime stamp. A cordial thank-you letter in which the famous actor acknowledges receipt of a shipment of books. He writes, in part: “To my great regret, I will not be available on either the 26th or the 27th of this month. I am currently traveling; within the next two days, I will send you the volume, renewing my thanks, and I ask you to accept the assurance of my highest regards.” The letter is signed: Coquelin. One of the most famous actors of his time, Ernest Coquelin—known as Coquelin the Younger—joined the Comédie-Française in 1867 and enjoyed a brilliant career there before pursuing an independent theatrical career. He was also an author, lecturer, and one of the most beloved performers of the French repertoire in the late 19th century. A charming courtesy letter, preserved in its original envelope, attesting to the relationships Coquelin maintained with his correspondents and his consistent attention to the conventions of letter-writing.
