NATIONAL CONVENTION. - Lot 89
NATIONAL CONVENTION. Decree ordering the trial of Fouquier-Tinville before the Revolutionary Tribunal. Paris, 14 Thermidor, Year II (August 1, 1794). Important official handwritten copy, one folio page, written on printed letterhead of the Department of Paris, reproducing the decree of the National Convention of 14 Thermidor Year II, concerning the indictment of Antoine-Quentin Fouquier-Tinville, public prosecutor at the Revolutionary Tribunal. The decree orders that Fouquier-Tinville be immediately placed under arrest and brought before the Revolutionary Tribunal to stand trial. It constitutes one of the first major judicial acts of the Thermidorian Reaction, directed against the principal figures responsible for the Reign of Terror following the fall of Robespierre. The document is certified as a true copy of the original and signed by members of the Convention’s Bureau, notably Jean-Baptiste Treilhard, President, and Pierre Dumont and Brival, secretaries. It also bears the certification of the Commission for the Transmission of Laws, signed by Chambon and Granville, followed by the handwritten signature of Secretary Dupré. One folio-sized page on laid paper with a printed letterhead. In very good condition, with original folds and slight foxing. Autographs Jean-Baptiste Treilhard (1742–1810), President of the National Convention, future member of the Directory. Pierre Dumont (1759–1829), deputy for Pas-de-Calais in the Convention. Brival, Secretary of the National Convention. Dupré, Secretary of the Commission for the Enactment of Laws. The decree announcing the prosecution of Fouquier-Tinville, the chief judicial architect of the Reign of Terror, stands as an exceptional testament to the political upheaval that occurred after 9 Thermidor.
