COMMUNE OF PARIS - Lot 87
COMMUNE OF PARIS Excerpt from the General Council’s register of deliberations concerning the silverware seized from a convent. Paris, Year II of the Republic (1793). Handwritten excerpt from the register of deliberations of the General Council of the Paris Commune, written on printed letterhead of the Paris Commune, bearing its engraved seal and addressed to the citizen president of the Section of the Fifteen-Eighty. This document records the deposit, with the Commune’s treasurer, of silver and copperware resulting from the seizure carried out on April 10 at the Picpus Convent, in accordance with the revolutionary measures for the confiscation of ecclesiastical property. The General Council acknowledges this transfer and orders that these items be credited to the Commune’s accounts as property acquired by the Revolution. Signed by the president of the General Council and the secretary-clerk, with a certification of authenticity from the clerk’s office. Handwritten address on the reverse to the president of the Section des Quinze-Vingts. One folio-sized page on laid paper with a printed letterhead. Original folds, some foxing and small stains from use; in very good condition. Historical Context Beginning in 1792–1793, the Paris Commune methodically organized the seizure of property belonging to dissolved religious institutions. Valuable objects from the convents were handed over to the Commune’s Treasury before being melted down or sold for the benefit of the Republic to finance the war effort and public expenditures. The Picpus Convent, founded in the 17th century, was one of many institutions affected by these revolutionary confiscations. The original administrative documents of the Paris Commune relating to the seizure of national property are far less common than simple revolutionary pamphlets and are of great interest both for the history of the French Revolution and for the history of ecclesiastical property.
