COMMISSION FOR THE COMPENSATION OF FORMER COLONISTS OF SAINT - Lot 84
COMMISSION FOR THE COMPENSATION OF FORMER COLONISTS OF SAINT-DOMINGUE. Certificate of filing of a claim for compensation. Paris, April 15, 1827. Printed administrative document with handwritten additions, large folio size, issued by the Secretariat of the Commission established to implement the law of April 30, 1826, dated Paris, April 15, 1827. Official document certifying the filing of a claim for compensation submitted under the law of April 30, 1826, intended to compensate former French colonists of Saint-Domingue for the loss of their property following Haiti’s independence. The document specifically mentions: file number 9336; the claimant’s name, Mr. Arondel, residing in Cardiff; the representative who submitted the claim; the number of documents submitted in support of the claim; the handwritten signature of the head of the Commission’s secretariat. This document is part of the extensive compensation program established following the Royal Ordinance of 1825 and the law of April 30, 1826, which instituted the famous “Saint-Domingue indemnity,” intended for former French landowners who were dispossessed of their property in the colony. Condition: generally good. Sturdy paper showing original folds, some foxing, soiling, and small marginal tears that do not affect the text. Well-preserved for this type of administrative document.
