COLLET (Concordat priest) - Lot 81
COLLET (Concordat priest) Autograph letter to Citizen Morel. Lyon, 9 Pluviôse, Year X (January 29, 1802). 4 pages in-4 on a double-leaf sheet with handwritten address, postmarks, and traces of a wax seal. A very interesting letter recounting Bonaparte’s visit to Lyon and the initial expectations raised by the religious reorganization. Written in the aftermath of the First Consul’s stay in the capital of Gaul, this letter offers firsthand testimony to the enthusiastic welcome Bonaparte received. Collet describes plans to beautify and rebuild the city, the subsidies promised for various public buildings, and the administrative reforms announced during the First Consul’s visit. The author also reports on several matters concerning the newly reorganized Cisalpine Republic and the institutional changes underway. These new policies are interspersed with more everyday observations regarding the harsh winter, the condition of the roads, and traffic difficulties in the Lyon region. Finally, the letter already contains allusions to the preliminary surveys concerning the churches and parish communities of the department—early signs of the impending resolution of the religious question. A wonderful account of the First Consul’s trip to Lyon and of the political atmosphere immediately preceding the Concordat.
