COLLET (Concordat priest) - Lot 78
COLLET (Concordat priest) Original letter to Citizen Morel. Lyon, 3 Germinal, Year X (March 24, 1802). 4 pages in-4 on a double-leaf sheet with handwritten address, postmarks, and traces of a wax seal. An interesting letter announcing the early stages of religious restoration prior to the official publication of the Concordat. Collet thanks his correspondent for the steps taken on his behalf and describes the situation of the Lyon clergy a few weeks before the implementation of the agreements between Bonaparte and the Holy See. He condemns the activism of refractory priests and networks of private oratories, while expressing his loyalty to the government and his hope that the Church would emerge definitively from the turmoil of the Revolution. The letter also contains several details regarding the management of Morel’s properties, notably the construction of a wine press, agricultural work, and land revenues. Collet provides valuable insight into the rural economy of the Lyon region and the difficulties in recruiting labor. Finally, there is a remarkable passage in which the author regards the restoration of Sunday rest as a harbinger of a return to traditional religious order. A very fine letter marking the transition from the revolutionary period to the Concordat regime.
