COLLET (Concordat priest) - Lot 77
COLLET (Concordat priest) Original letter to Citizen Morel. Lyon, June 10, 1802 (21 Prairial, Year X). 4 pages in-4 on a double-leaf sheet with a handwritten address on the reverse, postmarks, and a wax seal. A very interesting letter addressing the religious tensions following the Concordat. Collet recounts the arrival of M. de Mervenville and describes the state of division among the Lyon clergy. He reports on the Pentecost ceremony celebrated at Saint-Jean Church, the composition of the clergy in attendance, the measures taken against priests who refused to recant as demanded by the new ecclesiastical authorities, and the bishop’s interventions. The author provides firsthand account of the resistance encountered by the Concordat administration and of the debates pitting supporters of Rome against the former constitutional networks. Several influential figures are mentioned in connection with efforts to secure ecclesiastical positions and pensions. The letter also contains information regarding Morel’s properties, harvests, and local affairs, illustrating the role Collet played as an intermediary between Paris and the estates in Lyon. This document is of particular interest for the religious history of the Consulate.
