COLLET (Concordat Priest) - Lot 76
COLLET (Concordat Priest) Autograph letter on the back to Citizen Morel. Lyon, 20 Floréal, Year X (May 10, 1802). 4 pages in-4 on a double-leaf sheet with handwritten address, postmarks, and wax seal. An important letter concerning the promulgation of the law on religious worship and the reorganization of the Lyon clergy. Collet announces the solemn publication of the new religious legislation, celebrated in Lyon “with great civil and military pomp,” to the sound of bells and cannons. He analyzes the practical consequences of the Concordat and predicts that parish priests will gradually resume their duties while the religious structures established during the Revolution will disappear. The author vividly describes the reactions of the constitutional priests, local rivalries, petitions addressed to the prefect, and the maneuvers of the various ecclesiastical factions. He specifically mentions Belleville, private oratories, and the difficulties encountered in restoring discipline and religious peace. The letter also contains extensive information on Morel’s rural estates, the cultivation of vineyards, and the management of a large wine press. It is a remarkable document illustrating the interplay between religious affairs and land interests in Consular France. A historically significant document representing the early months of the Concordat.
