COLLET (Concordat priest) - Lot 75
COLLET (Concordat priest) Letter on the reverse side addressed to Citizen Morel. Lyon, 4 Prairial, Year X (May 24, 1802). 4 pages in-4 on a double-leaf sheet, handwritten address on the reverse, postmarks, and traces of a wax seal. A very interesting letter on the initial implementation of the Concordat in the Diocese of Lyon. Collet reports to his correspondent on the deep divisions still troubling the Lyon clergy a few weeks after the promulgation of the Organic Articles. He discusses the resistance of some of the former priests, the concerns raised by the reorganization of parishes, and the power struggles surrounding the new ecclesiastical appointments. The letter also provides a remarkable account of the economic situation in the Lyon region. The author describes the consequences of an exceptional frost that struck the vineyards of Beaujolais and Belleville, causing considerable crop losses. He provides extensive information on his correspondent’s vineyard estates, the condition of the wine presses, leasehold rents, and agricultural income. Finally, several passages concern the steps taken to secure him a stable ecclesiastical position with the prefectural and religious authorities. This correspondence sheds precise light on the difficulties faced by priests during the reconciliation between the Church and the State under the Consulate. A wonderful account of the realities of the Concordat as seen from the provinces.
