COLLET (Abbé Jean-Baptiste?) - Lot 74
COLLET (Abbé Jean-Baptiste?) Autograph letter to Citizen Morel. Lyon, July 7, Thermidor, Year X (July 26, 1802). 4 pages, in-4 format, on a double-leaf sheet. Handwritten address on the reverse. Postmarks and wax seal. A very interesting letter devoted to the concrete consequences of the Concordat in the Diocese of Lyon. Collet gives a detailed account of his efforts with the bishop to secure a stable ecclesiastical position following the upheavals of the Revolution. He describes his meetings with the prelate, the resistance he encountered, the rivalries between former constitutional and refractory priests, as well as the mechanisms for allocating ecclesiastical benefices. This firsthand account sheds light on the difficulties of reorganizing the French Church in the aftermath of the agreement reached between Bonaparte and Pius VII. The author also mentions various prominent figures in Lyon, local networks of influence, and the interventions he sought from his patrons. The letter is a particularly vivid document on the reception of the Concordat in a major French city. The most historically significant item in the collection.
