COLLET (Abbé Jean-Baptiste?) - Lot 72
COLLET (Abbé Jean-Baptiste?) Autograph letter to Citizen Morel. Lyon, July 10, 1802 (21 Messidor, Year X). 2 pages in-4 on a double-leaf sheet with a handwritten address on the reverse. Postmarks and wax seal. An interesting letter written a few months after the implementation of the Concordat of 1801. Here, Collet interweaves agricultural news with political and religious reflections. He informs his correspondent of the condition of the vineyards on his estates, discussing the impact of the spring frosts on the Beaujolais harvests and the prospects for the grape harvest. The letter also contains several observations on the persistent divisions within the clergy following the Revolution and the difficulties in reconciling constitutional and refractory priests. Collet reports on the discussions sparked by the recent statements of the bishops gathered at Notre-Dame and provides firsthand insight into the religious tensions of the Concordat era. The document is enriched with numerous details on life in Lyon, notably national festivities, local legal cases, and economic activity surrounding the city’s new bridge. A fine piece of historical writing combining religious history, viticulture, and provincial life under the Consulate.
