CLARETIE (JULES) (1840–1913) - Lot 70
CLARETIE (JULES) (1840–1913) Signed autograph letter. Signed autograph letter, 1 page, in-8 format (approx. 21 × 13.5 cm), in violet ink on letterhead printed “J. C.,” Viroflay, Chemin de la Saussaie (Seine-et-Oise). Dated July 24, 1902. A short letter addressed to a friend regarding news about a mutual acquaintance. Claretie writes: “My dear friend, I have learned of the artist’s arrival in Naples before (?) leaving the country. But neither Sarcey nor I have heard anything from him so far. With all my heart. Jules Claretie. ” (The name mentioned is slightly unclear, but it is very likely a reference to Francisque Sarcey.) This letter attests to the close relationships Jules Claretie maintained with the leading literary figures and theater critics of his time. He refers to information he has received regarding the relocation of an artist or a close acquaintance, while expressing regret at the lack of direct news. The mention of Francisque Sarcey, his longtime friend and a leading figure in Parisian theater criticism, situates this note within the literary and theatrical milieu of the Belle Époque. Physical Description 1 page, in-8 format. Printed letterhead: J. C. Viroflay Chemin de la Saussaie Seine-et-Oise. Violet ink. Handwritten date: July 24, 1902. Autograph signature of Jules Claretie. Condition Very good overall condition. Slight original horizontal crease. A few discreet signs of handling and very slight marginal wear. Fresh ink and perfectly legible. Significance A charming private letter illustrating the correspondence between Jules Claretie—General Administrator of the Comédie-Française and member of the Académie Française—and his literary circle. Although brief, it reflects the flow of information and the bonds of friendship among the leading figures of the theatrical world in the early 20th century. Claretie’s autograph letters, which shed light on his social network, are highly sought after for the insights they provide into the intellectual and artistic life of the Belle Époque.
