CHARMES (Francis) (1848–1916). - Lot 68
CHARMES (Francis) (1848–1916). Signed autograph letter (L.A.S.), Paris, August 1885, 3 pages in-8, with a signed, stamped envelope addressed to Armand de Sacy, Chief of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Versailles. A fine letter from Francis Charmes, then a senior official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs prior to his brilliant career as a journalist, member of the Academy, and editor of the *Revue des Deux Mondes*. He responds to Armand de Sacy regarding an inquiry about a Frenchman residing in Cremona, Italy. He explains that he immediately took steps with the ministry: “I did not reply right away, because I did not know if we had any representative in Cremona... ” He clarifies, however, that the city falls under the jurisdiction of the Milan consulate and that he has contacted the consul to obtain the requested information: “Cremona is within the jurisdiction of the Milan Consulate; I was going to write to our consul...” Having not yet received a reply, he promises to forward the information as soon as he receives it. He concludes with family news, expressing concern for the health of his correspondent’s mother: “I hope she’s feeling better… I need not tell you how deeply I shared in your father’s and your own concern.” An interesting letter illustrating the workings of the French diplomatic network in the late 19th century. Francis Charmes (1848–1916), a diplomat, journalist, politician, and member of the Académie française (1908), served as political director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before becoming one of the leading figures of the *Revue des Deux Mondes*. 3 pages, in-8 format, with the original autographed envelope preserved. Very good condition.
