CABANÈS (Dr. Augustin) (1862–1928) - Lot 63
CABANÈS (Dr. Augustin) (1862–1928) Signed autograph letter, Paris, January 1, 1907. 3-page autograph letter (2 pages of text and 1 long autograph page on the reverse), on letterhead from *La Chronique Médicale*, signed by Cabanès. Addressed to Paul d’Estrée. An important letter concerning the historical research conducted by the two scholars. Cabanès states that he has followed his correspondent’s publications with the greatest interest, particularly those devoted to Lavalette and Sade. He announces the preparation of a major, unpublished work on Jean-Paul Marat, the result of several years of research. He requests Paul d’Estrée’s assistance in identifying certain documents and artifacts that are now lost or scattered among private collections, emphasizing the importance of these sources for completing his study. The reverse side is entirely covered with a lengthy handwritten passage devoted to Cabanès’s research on Madame de Lamballe. In it, he revisits the psychological and physiological circumstances surrounding the princess’s death, discusses the value of several contemporary accounts, critiques certain historiographical interpretations, and sets forth the conclusions to which his own research has led him. These notes, clearly written to supplement his reply to Paul d’Estrée, constitute a genuine working draft revealing his critical method and erudition. A very interesting letter illustrating the genesis of Cabanès’s historical work and the scholarly exchanges he maintained with Paul d’Estrée.
