BRAUN (Théodore Élisée) (1805–1887). - Lot 58
BRAUN (Théodore Élisée) (1805–1887). Signed autograph letter (L.A.S.), Mulhouse, March 22, 1876, 3 pages, in-8 format, with a signed, stamped envelope, addressed to Armand de Sacy. A fine letter from Théodore Braun, magistrate, translator of Schiller, president of the Higher Consistory of the Church of the Augsburg Confession, and winner of the Langlois Prize from the Académie française. He asks his former colleague Armand de Sacy to accept a copy of his latest work, which he has just had delivered to him: “I hardly dare ask you to kindly accept a volume of my own making…” Braun explains that this book is the result of many years devoted to literature and hopes it will be received as a token of esteem from a former colleague. He specifically mentions his translation of Schiller, which was honored by the Académie Française, modestly noting: “It is being reprinted; it is not being rewritten.” He also mentions the Becker edition (1750) and takes an interest in the various versions of the translation. The letter bears witness to the scholarly exchanges between two high-ranking officials who were passionate about German literature and the history of literature. Théodore Braun (1805–1887) was a magistrate, president of the Higher Consistory of the Church of Augsburg, and a renowned translator of Schiller, whose translations were honored by the Académie Française (Langlois Prize, 1872). 3 pages, in-8 format, with the original envelope preserved. In very fine condition.
