BEYDTS (Louis). - Lot 53
BEYDTS (Louis). Signed autograph letter. Paris, 14 Rue de Bucarest, November 5, 1942. 2 pages, in-8 format, on paper with a printed address. Autograph signature “Louis Beydts.” An interesting autograph letter from Louis Beydts, a French composer who was very active in Parisian musical life during the Occupation. He thanks his correspondent—presumably a critic or columnist—for an article published in *Le Canard*, forwarded by Georges Bonaldi: “Georges Bonaldi told me of the kind trouble you went to, and I received an article from *Le Canard*…” The letter then discusses various exchanges regarding songs and musical works, mentioning several names, including Lachman/Lachmann, Raymond Poincaré, and, most notably, Sartre, in connection with a lecture: “Sartre, for his part, is giving a lecture tonight at the Dominicans…” This document is of interest due to its date—November 1942—and the intersection of Paris’s musical, journalistic, and literary worlds in the midst of the Occupation. Louis Beydts would go on to conclude his career as director of the Opéra-Comique in 1952–1953. Condition: generally good; central fold from handling, minor marginal marks, ink clearly legible.
