BELOT, Adolphe (1829–1890). Autograph letter signed “Adolphe Belot,” Malakoff, June 19, 1877, 2 pp., in-8. A moving letter addressed to “My dear Bella,” written the day after the death of an artist to whom Belot was clearly very attached. “Do not accuse me of indifference or forgetfulness if you do not see me tomorrow among all those who will come to offer your poor friend and you a token of sympathy and regret...” Belot explains that he will be unable to attend the funeral, not out of a lack of compassion, but because the memory of the deceased would be too painful for him: “I would have liked to join them, for I will always remember the great artist to whom I owe one of my greatest successes, and the man whom I knew intimately for a time and whom I had come to love. ” He notes that Mr. Chevrel informed him of the death on January 20 and adds: “I’m free at noon; I’ll go straight to Montmartre.” This letter offers a personal account of the Parisian theater world of the 1870s. In it, Adolphe Belot expresses with great sincerity his emotion at the passing of an artist to whom he acknowledges owing a significant part of his theatrical career. The very intimate tone reveals the bonds of friendship that united the writer with the theater community. Very good condition.
