AVIGNON. - Lot 41
AVIGNON. A pharmacist’s bill for Mademoiselle Maitette, for various purgatives, emetics, and cordials. Manuscript on paper, 2 folios in oblong 8vo format, dated between 1730 and January 1733, signed at the end: “May, apothecary.” In satisfactory condition despite a few small marginal losses. An interesting pharmaceutical record compiled for Mademoiselle Maitette, detailing the remedies dispensed over several years. The account precisely lists the preparations provided, their composition, and their cost. Notable items include: scammony syrup; jalap; purgative powder; ipecacuanha; rhubarb; purgative boluses; cinnamon water; opiate remedies; tonic preparations; various compounded preparations. The document perfectly illustrates early 18th-century therapeutic practices, which were dominated by purgatives, evacuants, and remedies intended to restore the body’s humoral balance. The presence of several successive prescriptions allows us to observe the medical care provided to a single patient over a relatively long period.
