ARMY OF SAINT-DOMINGUE. - Lot 38
ARMY OF SAINT-DOMINGUE. Receipt for provisions intended for army supply depots. Port-Républicain, Year VI of the Republic [1797–1798]. Handwritten administrative document, 1 folio page, issued by the Army of Saint-Domingue—Port-Républicain Garrison—Provisions, bearing several handwritten signatures and an administrative seal. An interesting report documenting the receipt of food supplies intended for the French army stationed in Saint-Domingue. The document certifies that, following the unloading of a ship commanded by Captain Gilbert Greye (spelling to be confirmed), an inspection of the goods was conducted in the military warehouses. The storekeeper acknowledges having received a large quantity of flour on behalf of Citizen Hammerbeck, the provisions supplier, while noting that fifty-five barrels arrived in poor condition or unfit for consumption. It is specified that a report was drawn up to document this damage. The document bears several signatures of commissaires des guerres and provisions administrators, as well as an official wet seal of the military administration. This document is characteristic of the operations of the French army’s quartermaster services in Saint-Domingue, illustrating the difficulties of maritime supply and the frequent losses of foodstuffs during transport operations throughout the Revolutionary Wars. Condition: shows signs of use. The paper has significant old creases, traces of moisture, small marginal tears, perforations, and wear, with no significant damage to the text. The wet seal is clearly visible. The document remains perfectly legible.
