ARMY OF SAINT-DOMINGUE. - Lot 37
ARMY OF SAINT-DOMINGUE. Military accounting document concerning a shipment of flour intended for the army’s rations. Headquarters at Le Cap, Year VI of the Republic [1797–1798]. Handwritten administrative document, 2 folio pages, issued by the Army of Saint-Domingue, General Accounting Office—Port-Républicain Storehouse, bearing several handwritten signatures and an administrative seal. An interesting military accounting document recording the receipt of a large shipment of flour intended for the French army’s supply depots in Saint-Domingue. The storekeeper certifies having received from Captain Robert Bairy, commander of the brig Cruzer, a shipment from Citizen Hammerbeck consisting of two hundred twenty-six barrels of flour, part of which is reported to be spoiled—approximately forty barrels—in accordance with the report drawn up during unloading. The document bears several administrative endorsements, signatures of military commissioners and authorizing officers, as well as the wet seal of the Provisions Administration. On the reverse side are several inspection notes and a decision by the Commissioner of War, acting as authorizing officer for the Artibonite and Southern departments, dated 13 Frimaire, Year VII. This document vividly illustrates the supply difficulties and the control procedures for provisions intended for the French army engaged in the War of Saint-Domingue, where the loss of goods during sea crossings was frequent. Condition: shows signs of use. The paper exhibits significant signs of moisture damage, tears, and marginal losses, as well as old creases from handling, perforations, and wear, though the main text remains largely intact. The wet seal is well-preserved. The document remains perfectly legible.
