AMBERT (Jean-Jacques) (1765–1851) - Lot 34
AMBERT (Jean-Jacques) (1765–1851) Signed autograph letter, Fourmies, January 24, 1807. Autograph signed letter (L.A.S.) of 4 pages, in-4 format, dated Fourmies, January 24, 1807, signed “Ernouf,” addressed to General Jean-Jacques Ambert, Major General of the Imperial Armies. A lengthy letter following up on an ongoing correspondence between the two men regarding a sensitive matter involving the Ernouf family. The author first thanks General Ambert for his interest in this matter and expresses his deep gratitude for the steps taken on his behalf. The letter then details the difficulties encountered, the accusations leveled against certain individuals involved, and the impact of this matter on his family’s reputation. Ernouf outlines the various steps taken to establish the truth, mentions several interventions with civil and military authorities, and describes the commitments made to various intermediaries. Finally, he requests the general’s assistance in securing a favorable outcome and preserving the honor of those involved. This correspondence illustrates the bonds of trust maintained between General Ambert and his entourage during the First Empire, in a context where issues of honor, reputation, and personal intervention played a central role. Jean-Jacques Ambert (1765–1851), a major general during the Revolution and the Empire, served with distinction in the French armies before being appointed governor of Guadeloupe. A baron of the Empire, he continued his career during the Restoration.
