AMBERT (Jean-Jacques) (1765–1851) - Lot 32
AMBERT (Jean-Jacques) (1765–1851) Signed autograph letter, Fourmies, June 17, 1807. A 4-page autograph letter in-4, dated Fourmies, June 17, 1807, signed J.-J. Ambert, preserved with an old identification note. An important letter addressed to General Jean-Jacques Ambert, then a general officer of the Empire. The author responds to a previous letter regarding a matter involving Monsieur Ernouf, whose honor is said to have been called into question. He states that his wife remains deeply affected by this situation and candidly expresses his views on the conduct of those involved. The letter then goes on to offer at length on the responsibilities of the various parties involved, discusses the need to shed full light on the facts, and strives to defend the integrity and reputation of those who have been unjustly compromised. The author concludes by reaffirming to General Ambert his deep regard and confidence in the general’s intervention. A Major General in the armies of the Revolution and the Empire, Jean-Jacques Ambert (1765–1851) participated in the Italian and German campaigns before holding important military posts in Corsica and later as governor of Guadeloupe. A Baron of the Empire, he continued his career during the Restoration before retiring permanently from military life. This is an interesting account from the private correspondence with one of the generals of the Empire, addressing a matter of honor and reputation within the military and administrative circles of the First Empire.
