CUSTOMS ADMINISTRATION. - Lot 30
CUSTOMS ADMINISTRATION. DECREE OF DECEMBER 1, 1821. Printed administrative document with significant handwritten notes, 2 folio pages on an official Customs Administration form (Series A, No. 163), bearing a 75-centime tax stamp, signed by the Director General of Customs, and containing handwritten entries from the Charleville office as well as the certificate of registration of the oath. Official decree appointing Jean-Baptiste Pellut, born in Reims on August 7, 1777, as brigade captain in Givet, within the Charleville district, effective December 1, 1821. The document notes Pellut’s seniority in the administration—he entered the Customs Service on June 1, 1811—and lists on the reverse side the regulatory duties associated with the position of brigade captain: supervision of the brigades, enforcement of customs laws, drafting of reports, maintenance of personnel discipline, inspection rounds, and taking the oath of office. The second page contains several handwritten notes regarding implementation: registration of the commission at the Charleville Customs Directorate office; certification that the oath taken upon his previous appointment was duly recorded at the Charleville court clerk’s office, in accordance with the law of April 21, 1818; the registry’s wet seal and the clerk’s signature certifying this formality, dated March 26, 1822. This document marks an important milestone in the career of Jean-Baptiste Pellut, already an experienced officer in the Royal Customs Service, now promoted to brigade captain—a senior leadership position that would precede his numerous transfers to the eastern border districts. Satisfactory condition. The paper is well-preserved despite the original administrative folds; there is slight marginal wear, and the beautiful tax stamp and the court’s wet seal are perfectly preserved. A particularly interesting career document, enhanced by his handwritten notes regarding registration and the taking of the oath, which are rarely preserved together.
