CUSTOMS ADMINISTRATION. - Lot 27
CUSTOMS ADMINISTRATION. Commission for Lieutenant of the Mounted Order. Paris and Charleville, 1817. Printed administrative document with significant handwritten notes, 1 large folio sheet, printed on both sides, bearing the royal coat of arms. Official commission from the Customs Administration appointing Jean-Baptiste Pelluch, born in Reims in 1777, to the position of mounted lieutenant in the Charleville Directorate, assigned to Sorendal (spelling to be confirmed). The appointment takes effect on June 1, 1817, replacing the previous commission dated July 1, 1816. The decree, dated June 1, 1817, is signed by the Councilor of State, Director General of the Customs Administration, and certified as true by the director of the personnel division. The reverse side lists the duties of the lieutenant in charge: supervising the brigades, maintaining discipline, overseeing the performance of duties, drafting violation reports, training staff, collecting customs duties, and enforcing laws relating to prohibitions. The document bears a handwritten endorsement certifying its registration at the Charleville Customs Directorate office on June 5, 1817, under No. 283, with the director’s handwritten signature. An interesting insight into the career of a Royal Customs officer during the Second Restoration, this commission demonstrates the administrative continuity of appointments and the strictness of the registration formalities imposed on government officials. A fine administrative document from the Restoration period, preserved with its handwritten annotations, official signatures, and registration stamp, illustrating the internal workings of the Customs Administration at the beginning of the reign of Louis XVIII.
