CUSTOMS ADMINISTRATION. - Lot 25
CUSTOMS ADMINISTRATION. Notice of the appointment of Jean-Baptiste Pellut as brigade inspector in Yutz (Thionville Directorate). Charleville, February 10, 1825. Official printed document with extensive handwritten annotations, 2 folio pages on laid paper, signed by the Director of Customs and accompanied by handwritten certificates of departure and arrival. Official notice informing Jean-Baptiste Pellut, then a brigade captain in Givet, of his appointment to the position of brigade inspector in Yutz, within the Thionville Customs Directorate, with an annual salary set at 2,000 francs. The document instructs him to report to his new administrative post without delay, under penalty of forfeiting his salary in the event of a delay, in accordance with the regulations of the Customs Administration. The form includes several handwritten notes regarding its execution, notably certification of his departure from Givet, confirmation of his assumption of duties at the new post, and various administrative observations concerning the transfer of service. These annotations illustrate the practical oversight of customs officers’ transfers during the Restoration. A highly interesting administrative document attesting to the rise of Jean-Baptiste Pellut, who was promoted from brigade captain to brigade controller—a significant milestone in a long career within the Customs Administration. This document fits perfectly into a coherent collection tracing his successive postings between 1811 and the 1830s. Fair condition. The document has significant marginal tears with old reinforcements, small paper losses along the edges, creases from handling, foxing, and signs of wear. Despite these flaws, the text remains perfectly legible and the handwritten notes are well preserved.
