CUSTOMS ADMINISTRATION - Lot 20
CUSTOMS ADMINISTRATION LIQUIDATION OF THE ILLYRIAN DIVISION. Signed autograph letter, Paris, April 26, 1817. An interesting handwritten administrative letter, 1 folio page with an address on the reverse, issued by the Customs Administration, concerning the liquidation of the former administration of the Illyrian Provinces following the fall of the Empire. Addressed to Jean-Baptiste Pellut, then a lieutenant in the Customs Service in Illyria, temporarily back in Marlémont, near Charleville, the letter refers to a formality that had remained pending following the withdrawal of French administration from the Illyrian territories. The author states: “You have not yet informed me, Sir, whether you have received the commission that was enclosed with my letter of March 6 of this year and which pertains to your appointment, in 1813, to the position of lieutenant of the 6th Division of Illyria. ” This correspondence is part of the administrative liquidation of the Illyrian Division, undertaken after the return of these territories to Austria in 1814–1815. It attests to the difficulties encountered by the French administration in regularizing the files of civil servants who had served in the former imperial provinces. The document contains several handwritten follow-up annotations, notably a note indicating that Mr. Pellut is a lieutenant of the order in Breid, as well as various references regarding the transmission and verification of the administrative file. This document is of definite historical interest as it illustrates the administrative consequences of the dissolution of the Illyrian Provinces, a little-documented episode in the history of the Imperial Customs Service, and remarkably complements the career file of Jean-Baptiste Pellut, tracing one of his rarest and most remote postings outside French territory. Satisfactory condition. A few creases from handling, slight soiling, and small signs of wear. Handwritten address on the reverse with postmarks and departure stamps from Charleville. A document of great historical and biographical interest, directly linked to the liquidation of French services in Illyria following the fall of the Empire.
