[Unidentified Bishop] - Lot 16
[Unidentified Bishop] Signed autograph letter, Turin, November 2, 1873. One-page autograph letter in-4, dated Turin, November 2, 1873, on unwatermarked paper bearing ecclesiastical arms. Unidentified signature, preceded by the episcopal symbol (†). An interesting letter addressed to a female correspondent regarding the aftermath of Saint-Michel’s death (probable interpretation). The author explains that he was unable to visit the deceased, as he was detained in Genoa, where his ministry to the victims of tragic events required him to remain. He then discusses the efforts of Mr. Germain, the care provided to Mr. Hyacinthe, as well as several other individuals mentioned in the letter, demonstrating his pastoral commitment under particularly difficult circumstances. Finally, he announces his upcoming departure for Fourvière, where he hopes to reunite soon with his correspondents, to whom he extends his best blessings. This document provides an interesting insight into the private correspondence of a French prelate on a mission in Italy in the wake of the political and religious upheavals of the second half of the 19th century. It illustrates the ties between French and Italian ecclesiastical circles, as well as the pastoral work of a bishop grappling with the consequences of tragic events.
