[Author unknown] Signed autograph letter, Paris, January 10, 1862. 3-page autograph letter (L.A.S.) in-8, dated Paris, January 10, 1862, preserved with its stamped envelope addressed to Madame Reville, 40 Rue des Fossés-du-Temple, Paris. An interesting letter addressed to a mother regarding her daughter’s artistic education. The author warmly recommends Mlle Chevier (likely a reading teacher), the innkeeper at the Hôtel des Princes on Rue d’Enfer, with whom the young student can continue her studies. He outlines this person’s teaching qualities, emphasizes the need for firm yet compassionate discipline, and explains the reasons behind his choice. The letter offers a thoughtful reflection on artistic training, the guidance of students, and the teacher’s duties toward their pupils. The author concludes by reassuring his correspondent of his complete devotion. An interesting account of private art instruction during the Second Empire, preserved in its original envelope.
