VIGNY (Alfred de). Correspondence. First Series (1816–1835).
Notes and explanations by Fernand Baldensperger.
Paris, Louis Conard, 1933.
In-8, paperback, publisher’s printed cover.
Edited and annotated by Fernand Baldensperger, this volume focuses on the early period of Alfred de Vigny’s correspondence, covering the years 1816 to 1835—a pivotal time in his literary development and his rise within the French Romantic movement. The volume brings together numerous letters addressed to his contemporaries, including Charles Nodier, Théophile Gautier, Augustin Soulié, and Alexandre Guiraud, offering a first-rate account of French literary life during the Restoration and the July Monarchy.
A rare deluxe edition limited to only 75 numbered copies. This is one of 50 copies printed on “Japon ancien” paper—the only large-format paper used after the 25 copies printed on “Japon impérial,” which were embellished with a double set of portraits. It bears the handwritten notation “Copy No. 29.”
The copy is preserved in its original, untrimmed brochure. Very slight signs of handling on the cover; the interior is in pristine condition. A very fine copy of this sought-after edition, rare on large-format paper.
One of the most sought-after copies of the Conard edition of Vigny’s complete works, particularly prized by bibliophiles for the quality of its paper and its limited print run.
