RIEMANN (Hugo), Dictionary of Music - Lot 271
RIEMANN (Hugo), Dictionary of Music Paris, Perrin et Cie, Librairie académique Didier, 1899. Large 8vo, chocolate-colored half-shagreen with corner pieces, ribbed spine with gold decoration and gold lettering. An important French edition of the famous Dictionary of Music by Hugo Riemann, one of the most eminent German musicologists of the late 19th century. Translated from the fourth German edition and revised by Georges Humbert, professor of music history at the Geneva Conservatory, this work was one of the primary reference tools for musicians, musicologists, and music historians of its time. A veritable musical encyclopedia, it brings together several thousand entries devoted to composers, performers, theorists, musical forms, instruments, genres, and technical concepts. Its scholarship, documentary scope, and emphasis on synthesis made it an indispensable reference work in specialized libraries for several decades. A copy firmly bound in period half-shagreen, retaining all its bibliographic and documentary value. The binding is in good condition, showing some scuffing and wear on the leather. The interior is in very good condition, with well-preserved paper.
