MUSSET (Alfred de), Poems. - Lot 250
MUSSET (Alfred de), Poems.
I. Early Poems (1829–1835).
II. New Poems (1836–1852).
Paris, Charpentier, Bookseller and Publisher, 1864 and 1867.
2 in-12 volumes, elegant period bindings in red half-maroquin with corner caps, spines with finely decorated and gilt raised bands, gilt heads.
A fine set bringing together the two main poetic collections by Alfred de Musset, a major figure of French Romanticism. These volumes offer an almost complete overview of the lyrical work of a writer who remains one of the greatest poets of the 19th century, alongside Victor Hugo, Lamartine, and Vigny.
*Les Premières Poésies* (1829–1835) brings together the early works that introduced Musset to the literary public. Here we discover the brilliance of a precocious talent, blending Romantic audacity, fantasy, irony, and formal virtuosity. These texts bear witness to the artistic effervescence of the 1830s and the young poet’s participation in the triumphant Romantic movement.
*Les Poésies nouvelles* (1836–1852) mark a noticeable shift toward a more intimate and serious tone. It was during this period that several of Musset’s most famous works were written, fueled by emotional wounds, reflections on time, solitude, and the disillusionments of life. His famous affair with George Sand finds some of its most moving echoes in these verses.
Musset’s poetic work is distinguished by a rare combination of spontaneity, musicality, and sincerity. His personal lyricism, often imbued with an elegant melancholy, has profoundly influenced several generations of readers. Poems such as *La Nuit de Mai*, *La Nuit de Décembre*, *Souvenir*, and *Tristesse* rank among the pinnacles of French Romantic poetry.
Published in the Charpentier collection, these volumes contributed to the enduring popularity of Musset’s work in the second half of the 19th century. They remain an important reference for the study of his poetic output to this day.
Copies bound in period red half-maroquin with corner caps, spines elegantly decorated with gilt fillets and fleurons, gilt heads. Some slight signs of wear, particularly on one cap, but nothing serious. A harmonious and decorative set.
A beautiful collection bringing together the essential poetry collections of Musset, one of the most personal, musical, and moving voices of French Romanticism.
