MAROT (Jean). Architecture françoise. - Lot 225
MAROT (Jean). Architecture françoise.
Large folio. Modern full tobacco-colored leather binding, spine richly decorated with gilt metal tools in the 18th-century style.
A beautiful facsimile reprint of one of the most important collections of French architecture from the Classical period. The volume reproduces 196 engraved plates by Jean Marot (c. 1619–1679), an architect, draftsman, and engraver whose collections constitute a fundamental source for the study of French architecture during the reign of Louis XIII and the early reign of Louis XIV.
The plates feature elevations, sections, facades, perspectives, gardens, and architectural details of numerous civil and religious buildings. In particular, they document private mansions, castles, palaces, and urban developments, offering an exceptional overview of French architecture during the Grand Siècle. Among the views reproduced are monumental projects, aristocratic residences in Paris, as well as surveys of ancient and Eastern buildings that fueled the architectural imagination of the era.
This edition allows readers to appreciate the finesse of Marot’s linework and the documentary value of his work, which has become an indispensable reference for architectural historians, interior designers, architects, and lovers of 17th- and 18th-century French art.
A very fine copy in an elegant modern full tobacco-colored leather binding. The interior is fresh and well-preserved. The plates, printed on large-format paper, offer faithful reproductions of the original engravings.
A reference work on classical French architecture, sought after for the richness of its iconography and the quality of its reproductions, constituting one of the most important compilations of architectural engravings from the Ancien Régime.
