HENRIOT (Émile), *Le Diable à l'hôtel*. - Lot 180
HENRIOT (Émile), *Le Diable à l'hôtel*. Color woodcuts by Gaston Nick. Paris, Les Éditions de la Nouvelle France, 1944. In-8, paperback, illustrated cover with gilded edges. An illustrated edition of this literary evocation of Provence and Aix-en-Provence by Émile Henriot, enriched with 26 color woodcuts by Gaston Nick, including the cover vignette, a frontispiece, a title vignette, eighteen illustrations in the text, and five separate plates. The illustrations, with their warm, southern tones, beautifully complement the descriptions of squares, markets, mansions, and Provençal landscapes that make up the book. First copy, one of 15 non-commercial copies printed on white Marais vellum, a particularly limited run within an edition of 3,065 copies. A valuable addition: an autographed dedication by Émile Henriot to Gaston Nick, dated October 1944: “To Gaston Nick-Petillot, in memory of his kind collaboration, a friendly tribute.” This dedication directly links the author to his illustrator and lends the copy special bibliophilic interest. The cover is in good condition despite some marginal fragility inherent to wartime paper. The interior is fresh and complete with all its color illustrations.
