The author draws on documents that were unpublished at the time and sheds scholarly light on the fate of Louis XV’s former favorite. This copy is enhanced by an autograph dedication signed by the author on the half-title page: “Grateful tribute,” addressed to Mr. Charavay, likely a member of the famous Charavay dynasty of autograph collectors and booksellers. The title page is separate from the main body of the book.
