DURAS (Claire de Kersaint, Duchess of), *Memoirs of Sophie*, - Lot 147
DURAS (Claire de Kersaint, Duchess of), *Memoirs of Sophie*, followed by *Amélie* and *Pauline*. Novels of Emigration (1789–1800).
Edited, introduced, and annotated by Marie-Bénédicte Diethelm.
Paris, Éditions Manucius, 2011.
In-8, paperback, printed cover.
A modern reprint of two texts by Madame de Duras (1777–1828)—a major figure of French Romanticism and a close friend of Chateaubriand—that remained unpublished for a long time. These novels about emigration, written in the 1820s, stem from the author’s personal experience of exile during the French Revolution. They offer a sensitive literary account of the plight of émigrés, the political upheavals, and the reshaping of individual destinies at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries.
This edition, edited by Marie-Bénédicte Diethelm, carefully restores these texts, which had long been inaccessible, and helps renew interest in a writer whose novels *Ourika* and *Édouard* now occupy an important place in the history of French literature.
A beautiful copy preserved in its original paperback binding. Cover in very good condition. Interior perfectly fresh and clean.
