CHARAVAY (Étienne). Review of Historical Documents. - Lot 115
CHARAVAY (Étienne). Review of Historical Documents. A collection of curious and unpublished documents, published with notes and commentary. Paris, Charavay Frères—C. Motteroz, printer, 1875–1877. 3 volumes bound together in 1 in-8 volume, in the publisher’s brown half-cloth, with marbled paper covers. This volume brings together the third, fourth, and fifth years of the renowned *Revue des documents historiques*, a publication founded and edited by Étienne Charavay, an archivist and paleographer who was a leading figure in the world of autographs and historical archives during the 19th century. This important collection brings together a multitude of rare or unpublished texts from public and private collections: diplomatic correspondence, memoirs, official records, ecclesiastical documents, and materials relating to the Ancien Régime, the French Revolution, the Empire, and European history. The volume notably includes studies devoted to Eleanor of Aquitaine, the wars of the 18th century, the Vendée, Pierre Mignard, religious affairs, and numerous historical figures. Thanks to its scholarly rigor and the quality of its sources, the *Revue des documents historiques* remains a standard reference today for historians, genealogists, and manuscript collectors. These volumes constitute a valuable testament to French historical scholarship of the late 19th century. Condition A fine copy in the publisher’s binding. The binding is sturdy and uniform. Some normal wear on the head and foot caps and the spine. The paper has a uniform brownish patina, as is often the case. The interior is sound and complete.
