BUCHON (J. A. C.). Selected Chronicles and Memoirs on the Hi - Lot 62
BUCHON (J. A. C.). Selected Chronicles and Memoirs on the History of France. With biographical notes by J. A. C. Buchon. Paris, A. Desrez, 1836. Large 8vo, contemporary black half-basane, smooth spine with decorative gilt lettering, marbled paper covers. An important historical publication edited by Jean-Alexandre-C. Buchon, a 19th-century scholar and historian, devoted to the major narrative sources of national history. This volume brings together the Chronicles of Enguerrand de Monstrelet, a continuator of Froissart and a key witness to the events that marked the end of the French Middle Ages, particularly during the reigns of Charles VI and Charles VII, the civil war between the Armagnacs and the Burgundians, and the final phases of the Hundred Years’ War. This edition presents a carefully edited text accompanied by biographical and historical notes designed to facilitate engagement with these medieval sources. Monstrelet’s accounts constitute one of the fundamental sources for the study of 15th-century France, both for political and military history and for understanding the customs and institutions of the era. A fine copy in a contemporary binding, representative of the major historical collections published during the July Monarchy to make the principal texts of French historiography available to the public. Condition Binding is slightly scuffed with some wear on the caps and joints. Interior is fresh, with well-preserved paper and no significant foxing noted. A fine working copy in its period binding.
