BLENNERHASSETT (Lady, née Countess of Leyden). Madame de Staël and Her Time (1766–1817).
With previously unpublished documents.
Translated from the German by Auguste Dietrich.
Paris, Louis Westhausser, 1890.
3 in-8 volumes, red half-cloth, marbled paper covers.
A major biographical study devoted to Germaine de Staël, a leading figure in European intellectual and political life at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Lady Blennerhassett’s work, based on numerous previously unpublished documents, remains one of the most thoroughly researched biographies of Madame de Staël, accurately tracing her literary, philosophical, and political influence within post-revolutionary and Napoleonic Europe.
The author situates the famous woman of letters within her family, diplomatic, and intellectual circles, bringing to life the prominent figures in her circle: Necker, Benjamin Constant, Chateaubriand, Talleyrand, and even Napoleon. This sweeping historical narrative, translated into French by Auguste Dietrich, was well received by 19th-century historians and literature enthusiasts.
This copy is preserved in a period binding of red half-cloth with marbled paper covers.
