HISTORICAL YEARBOOK FOR THE YEAR 1840, Published by the Société de l'Histoire de France. Paris, Jules Renouard & Co., 1839. In-12, contemporary binding in midnight blue half-maroquin, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets, marbled paper covers. An interesting volume published under the auspices of the newly founded Société de l’Histoire de France, established in 1833 to promote the critical edition of French historical sources. This yearbook is a valuable reference tool for 19th-century scholars and, in addition to the historical calendar for the year, includes biographical entries, chronological tables, bibliographic references, and various information pertaining to national history. Notably, it includes a substantial section devoted to historical events arranged by date, entries on prominent figures in French history, and an alphabetical index of the chronological tables. A characteristic example of historical scholarship under the July Monarchy, the work illustrates the effort to systematize and disseminate historical knowledge undertaken by the major learned societies of the 19th century. Copy preserved in its original binding. Interior clean and complete. A few scattered foxing spots and normal browning of the paper. The binding shows scuffing and missing sections at the caps, visible in the photographs, but this does not affect the book’s structural integrity.
