YEARBOOK FOR THE YEAR 1826, PRESENTED TO THE KING BY THE BUR - Lot 12
YEARBOOK FOR THE YEAR 1826, PRESENTED TO THE KING BY THE BUREAU DES LONGITUDES Paris, Bachelier, successor to the widow Courcier, 1825. In-12, contemporary bottle-green half-maroquin binding, smooth spine richly decorated with gilt fillets and gilt metalwork, marbled paper covers. An official publication of the prestigious Bureau des Longitudes, this almanac is one of the most widely distributed scientific works of the first half of the 19th century. Intended for astronomers, navigators, hydrographers, and engineers, it compiles the astronomical ephemerides essential for maritime navigation, as well as a multitude of scientific, geographical, meteorological, and economic tables. The 1826 edition notably contains annual astronomical calculations, planetary motions, nautical tables, tide times, international currency conversions, as well as various scientific and historical notes reflecting the state of knowledge during the Restoration. The printed tables, of remarkable typographical precision, attest to the practical importance of these works for the navy and the applied sciences. A fine copy in a uniform period binding. The interior is complete and well-preserved despite a few scattered foxing spots and slight browning of the paper. The binding is sturdy, with moderate wear on the head and foot caps and the joints. The original bookmark is preserved. The yearbooks of the Bureau des Longitudes are now highly sought-after sources for the history of science, astronomy, and navigation, particularly when preserved in their original bindings.
