YEARBOOK FOR THE YEAR 1825, PRESENTED TO THE KING BY THE BUR - Lot 11
YEARBOOK FOR THE YEAR 1825, PRESENTED TO THE KING BY THE BUREAU DES LONGITUDES Paris, Bachelier, successor to the widow Courcier, 1824. In-12, elegant contemporary binding in bottle-green half-maroquin, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets and fleurons, marbled paper covers. A rare official scientific publication of the Bureau des Longitudes, an institution established during the Revolution to standardize the astronomical and nautical calculations essential for navigation and scientific observation. Throughout the 19th century, these annual almanacs served as reference works for sailors, astronomers, engineers, geographers, and scholars. The 1825 edition contains astronomical ephemerides, tables of celestial movements, the phases of the Moon, tide times, navigational calculations, as well as numerous comparative tables of currencies, weights, and measures from the major European nations. The illustrated pages feature, in particular, the international currency tables and monthly astronomical data, which formed the practical core of the work. A fine copy preserved in a uniform period binding. The interior is fresh and complete. The paper is slightly browned. There are some signs of wear and rubbing on the head and foot of the binding, but these do not affect the book’s structural integrity. The bookmark is intact. The Bureau des Longitudes yearbooks are now sought after by collectors of the history of science, navigation, and astronomy, particularly when they remain in their original bindings.
