YEARBOOK FOR THE YEAR 1824, PRESENTED TO THE KING BY THE BUR - Lot 10
YEARBOOK FOR THE YEAR 1824, PRESENTED TO THE KING BY THE BUREAU DES LONGITUDES Paris, Bachelier, successor to the widow Courcier, 1823. In-12, contemporary binding in bottle-green half-maroquin, smooth spine decorated with gold fillets, marbled paper covers. An official publication of the prestigious Bureau des Longitudes, founded in 1795 to advance the astronomical, geographical, and nautical knowledge necessary for navigation. This almanac is one of the most important scientific tools of the first half of the 19th century, consulted by sailors as well as astronomers, geographers, engineers, and scholars. The volume compiles the astronomical ephemerides for the year 1824, the phases of the Moon, nautical tables, tide times for major European ports, scientific observations, as well as various articles on astronomy, meteorology, and advances in the applied sciences. The pages shown here feature, in particular, data intended for navigation and contemporary scientific papers. This copy is preserved in its original binding. The interior is clean and complete. The paper is slightly browned, as is often the case. The binding shows some minor scuffing and wear on the caps, nothing serious; overall, it remains sturdy and attractive. The yearbooks of the Bureau des Longitudes are now highly sought-after sources for the history of science, astronomy, and navigation.
