18th-Century Song and Love Almanacs. - Lot 7
18th-Century Song and Love Almanacs. From the collection of Mr. Henri Lavedan of the Académie française. Preface by Mr. Albert Flament. Paris, L. Giraud-Badin, 1928. In-8, paperback, printed cover. An interesting descriptive catalog devoted to one of the most remarkable private collections of 18th-century gallant, song, and illustrated almanacs assembled by Henri Lavedan. The work provides a detailed inventory of these charming small-format prints that were part of high society life during the Ancien Régime, combining songs, fashion engravings, anecdotes, calendars, New Year’s gifts, and literary entertainment. The entries describe numerous precious bindings of the period—maroquin leather, brocaded silk, cases for styluses or pencils, and bindings bearing coats of arms—as well as the colored illustrations that today account for the rarity and charm of these publications. In particular, it includes descriptions of almanacs dedicated to Parisian pleasures, women’s fashions, galant gatherings, and the entertainments of the Court and Versailles. Illustrated with 8 black-and-white insert plates, reproducing several of the finest examples from the collection. A reference work for enthusiasts of 18th-century bibliophilia, antique bindings, and illustrated almanacs. Condition Spine partially detached. Cover slightly dusty and worn. Interior fresh and well-preserved.
