ALAIN (Émile-Auguste Chartier, known as), *Les Cent Un Propo - Lot 2
ALAIN (Émile-Auguste Chartier, known as), *Les Cent Un Propos* (3rd series).
Rouen-Paris, *La Dépêche de Rouen et de Normandie*, 1911.
In-12, paperback, printed cover.
First edition of the third series of Alain’s famous *Propos*, a collection of philosophical and moral essays published in the Normandy press. Through these brief, incisive, and remarkably clear texts, Alain explores the themes that would make him famous: freedom of judgment, education, morality, politics, religion, and humanity’s relationship with the world.
A leading figure in 20th-century French thought and a mentor to several generations of intellectuals, Alain presents here one of the most characteristic expressions of his art of the “propos”—a literary form that is at once meditative, critical, and accessible.
The book is printed on fine handmade paper and is part of a limited edition reserved for bibliophile collectors.
One of 150 numbered copies on handmade paper.
Copy preserved in its original slipcase. Paper has uniformly browned, as is often the case. Some signs of wear and small marginal tears on the cover, without affecting the text.
