TOLSTOY (Leo) - Lot 269
TOLSTOY (Leo) Paris, Librairie Gedalge et Cie. A beautiful, illustrated edition of one of Leo Tolstoy’s major autobiographical works. In it, the writer recounts his formative years, his family memories, life among the Russian nobility, and the experiences that would later inspire his novels. This French edition, translated and revised by E. Halpérine-Kaminsky, is enriched with forty-three illustrations by J.-Pierre Laurens and portraits of the author. It reflects the bibliophilic taste of the late 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century for the great works of Russian literature. Description: Large 8vo, publisher’s decorated binding, with a photographic portrait mounted on the front cover. Illustrations appear as inserts. Some foxing and signs of age; the binding remains decorative and sturdy.
