MATISSE (Henri). - Lot 185
MATISSE (Henri). Vence, 1955. An official publication dedicated to one of the most remarkable achievements of Henri Matisse’s career: the Chapel of the Rosary in Vence, created between 1948 and 1951 for the Dominican Sisters of Vence. The artist himself regarded this monumental complex—comprising architecture, stained-glass windows, ceramics, liturgical vestments, and wall drawings—as the culmination of his entire body of work. The book presents the various stages of the chapel’s design as well as the main decorative elements that today make it one of the major monuments of 20th-century sacred art. The famous blue cut-out motifs reproduced on the cover directly evoke the plant-like and luminous forms of the stained-glass windows designed by Matisse. A now-classic reference for the study of the Fauvist master’s religious work, published shortly after the chapel’s completion. Quarto, illustrated paperback. Location: Vence. Date: MCMLV (1955). Illustrations: reproductions and documents related to the Chapel of the Rosary.
